At seven years of age, the colour is amazing. It’s bright plum red with no browning at the edges and it coats the glass. The nose is classic young Peel Shiraz. There’s the tell-tale chalk sitting in deep red cherry-berry fruits and with a substantial oak factor in the background. But the overall sensation is of youthfulness. The palate rolls out like a fine Persian carpet. Silky, smooth, deeply patterned in its fruit complexity and with the oak a lot more integrated than the bouquet suggests. This is a triumph of a mature vineyard and a winemaking team that understands it. Great drinking now, it will be much better in five years and who knows what promise beyond that. While the Peel limestone provides that perfect fruit profile, it also demands time for all its glories to unfold.Drink now – 2025
Hand-picked, open-fermented for 5 days, 30 months maturation, 90% in French oak, 10% American. The fruit carries the alcohol and the oak like an old pro - and has easily surmounted another 5 years bottle age.
