2013 Michel Magnien Morey-Saint-Denis Monts Luisants, Burgundy

First mentioned as far back as 1120, fourteenth century Morey was a place of asylum for Cistercian monks who appeared to have possessed numerous vineyards and even a winery by 1306.

The 2013 Michel Magnien Morey-Saint-Denis les Monts Luisants (Rouge) comes from 0.38-hectares of 50- to 60-year-old vine and is a blend of premier cru and village vines. It has a lively bouquet with mulberry, raspberry and pine needle scents that are nicely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a ‘juicy’ supple opening. This is a beautifully balanced with a fine line of acidity, a gentle build to quite a structured finish that does not outstay its welcome. This should be well worth seeking out.
