Barbera is the 3rd most planted grape varietal in Italy (after Sangiovese and Montepulciano). Century-old vines still exist in many regional vineyards and allow for the production of long-aging, robust red wines with intense fruit and enhanced tannic content. The best known appellation is the DOCG Barbera d'Asti in the Piedmont.
The 2015 Barbera d'Asti Lavignone is a beautiful, perfumed wine with lovely aromatics, plummy dark red fruit and terrific overall balance. Sweet spiced notes add complexity, but the 2015 is all about juiciness. Ideally, the Lavignone is best enjoyed sooner rather than later. Drink now to 2019.
