2013 Prunotto Occhetti Nebbiolo d'Alba, Piedmont

Alfredo Prunotto gave his name and thirty-three years of his life to this renowned winery in Piedmont. Since 1989 it has been owned by the Antinori family, who have sought to boost the already high standards by extending the vineyard holdings, including plots in the de facto grands crus of Bric Turot and Bussia. The quality of the top wines goes without saying, but the rest of the range is made with equal aplomb. The style is modern without being exaggerated: freshness of aroma and approachability of structure are viewed as positives. The wine is from a single-site wine from the Occhetti vineyard, situated 250 metres above sea level in Monteu Roero. The soil is sandy, with gravel and some calcareous clay; the exposure is south/south-west. This single-vineyard Nebbiolo offers an elegant nose with hints of raspberries and rose. On the palate, it is full and harmonious with a long, positive finish.
