Decanter Magazine’s tasting panel voted 2014 Berton Vineyard Reserve Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon number 1 New Word Cabernets under £40, beating all-comers including 2009 Jim Barry Benbournie, 2008 Geoff Merrill Reserve, 2014 Taylors St Andrews and 2013 Yalumba Menzies.
The judges awarded it 96 points describing the wine as:
‘pure dark blackberries and licorice make for an enticing nose. This flows onto a mineral-drenched palate and wonderful salinity and mouth-watering acidity backed up by fine-grained tannins, Cool, elegant and effortless.’
The Reserve Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon has an impenetrable black colour; it is very fragrant with aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, fresh tobacco and sweet pepper. The palate is intense and concentrated with a fine structure showing abundant blackberry, cassis, minerals and light toasty oak notes that combine to give a long persistent finish. Perfect with fillet mignon or rich pasta dishes!
