49% Grenache, 25% Carignan, 16% Shiraz, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon (or 49% de garnaxas, 25% carinena, 16% syrah, 10% cabernet sauvignon). I’ve had a relationship with Clos Mogador for over a decade now, though it’s fair to say that the popularity of Spanish wines seems to have waned in Australia over the last number of years. Now it’s all about Italy, for the people with Good Taste and Fancy Hair. Clos Mogador though, is still a favourite. I believe 2014 was a cooler, wetter year, but in such a torrid region as Priorat, I can’t see it’s hindered this wine at all.
It’s a wine you can get lost in, that’s for sure. Raspberry, blackberry, tar, wild herbs, licorice, spice and crushed rocks. It’s full bodied, but fresh and lively, with unrepentant minerality, slaty tannin, packed with juicy berries and ‘fruitiness’, though at no point does it feel simple or anything other than the product of a remarkable vineyard. The length, in particular, is superb. This is exciting.
