2014 Ocean Eight Grande Chardonnay, Mornington Peninsula, for the buttery chardonnay lover. Rich yellow and white peach fruit, with butterscotch and brioche notes. The full bodied palate is still elegant, helped along by a preserved lemon acidity. Amazing length, with a lip-smacking finish. Splash out some grilled buttered scampi.

Yield for Grande Chardonnay fruit was 2.8t/acre. Clone, known as 277, was planted in 1999.
Fruit was ‘wholebunch’ pressed directly into 20% new French puncheons & 80% old barrels (7+years).
After natural fermentation (3-6 weeks) the wine was matured in barrel for 10 months,
The resultant wine is pale gold in colour and gives little indication of its age or extended barrel maturation. The aromas are spicy with a hint of burnt matchstick along with some honeyed lemon. Whilst certainly not over the top the wine is rich compared to the Verve Chardonnay. Honey notes are strong at the front of the palate and there is some toast from the oak. At the back of the palate, the acid kicks in and the finish is dry and lingering. Ideally suited to full flavoured fish and lighter, roasted poultry dishes.

What started as a part time job to earn a few dollars during his university days has turned into an obsession. Michael worked in the family owned winery, Kooyong, spending time out in the vineyard, in the winery and on the road, the net result was a desire to make this his career.Following the sale of Kooyong Michael went into business with his parents to form Ocean Eight taking on the role of Head Winemaker and General Manager. To complete his education Michael undertook several study tours of France, concentrating on the hallowed vineyards and cellars of Burgundy. This tour has obviosly paid off. In 2011 Michael won the highly coveted “Young Gun Of Wine” award.

If you are happy to pay for high-quality Australian chardonnay, this is worth seeking out. It was a very small production from the best parcel of land from the Ocean Eight vineyard. A very balanced and elegant chardonnay.
Straw-gold in colour. Matchstick aromatics introduce an intense palate, all richness and swagger. It’s a chardonnay in full flight. We see sweet spice, we see yellow stone fruit, we see honey and citrus. It’s bold but it soars through the finish. Killer quality.
