Chateau les Ormes de Pez has history that goes back to 16th century when it was referred to as Domaine de Pez. Ormes translated from French to English means Elms, which is a type of tree that at one point was part of the estate's landscape. Today Chateau Les Ormes de Pez is owned by Lynch Bages's Cazes family. The 40 hectare vineyard of Chateau Les Ormes de Pez is planted to 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

The wine is vinified in stainless steel vats while the malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel and vat with 30% of the harvest being used in the process. Les ormes de Pez is then aged for about 15 months in 50% new French oak barrels.

Les Ormes de Pez should be first drunk at the age of 10 and then for the next 10 years with classic meat dishes.

The 2017 medium-bodied wine was produced from 51% Merlot , 42% Cabernet Sauvignon , 6% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot .

Powerful and structured with lots of blueberry, blackberry and currant character. Full-bodied, tight and tannic yet polished and beautiful. Fantastic. Juicy.

The 2017 Les Ormes de Pez was matured in 45% new oak with 13.42% alcohol. None of the vines were touched by frost. Cropped at round 50hl/ha, it has a clean, pure red cherry, blackcurrant and cedar-scented bouquet, more Pauillac in style than Saint-Estèphe. The palate is well balanced with ripe tannin that feel more malleable than previous vintages at this stage, a little saline in the mouth with a silky smooth finish. This will be delicious over the next couple of decades and I suspect it will be more approachable than the 2016. Don’t ignore this.
