Flametree SRS has been one of the most consistent Chardonnay to come out of Margaret River in the past 10 years. The 2017 SRS Chardonnay was barrel fermented in 35% new French puncheons and then aged for 10 months. The lees were stirred, while 20% of the barrels were inoculated for malolactic fermentation to give the wine a little more texture and softness to the acid.
The result is the wine that shows good freshness of fruit together with some savoury notes from the solids and wild ferment. Classic grapefruit, white peach and dried pear fruits give way to barrel ferment and sulphide complexities. These sulphides contribute a lovely savoury oyster shell or saline character, giving the wine greater complexity and overall purity. This style ultimately complements many modern Australian food flavours. Drinking well now but will cellar 5-10 years.

This 59/41% blend strikes very different notes, tighter in some ways, looser in others. The two components spent 10 months in French oak and stainless steel, the oak obvious. Over the past 6 months, the power, drive and intensity of the wine have all increased, cleansing the finish and extending the length.
