This year's Plonk is a barrel fermented aromatic blend of Upper Goulburn and old vine Great Western Riesling. The ancient bush vines of the Great Western vineyard date back to, at least, 1890 and are incredibly low yielding (less than one-tonne per acre). As such, they produce intensely flavoured fruit.
Gary tells us the site--which is on the grey loams over deep limestone abutting the Concongella Creek --was as good as mothballed when he approached the owner back in 2005. Anyway, indigenous yeast ferment, left on its lees for eight months and bottled unfined and unfiltered. The new vintage (from a hype year, you know) is super textural with lovely floral scents and a long, thirst-quenching finish--is Plonk, is Good.
