Intense but refined muscat aromas of jasmine, white peach and apricot, typical of a high-quality Malagousia, are pleasantly balanced by the freshness of a mountainous Roditis adding a crispy acidity and zest to the final blend. The lingering fruity aftertaste underpins the intense flavor and highlights a wine with an enchanting character.
Can be enjoyed all year round, on its own as an aperitif, or paired to salads, fresh cheese and fish.
The 2018 Paranga white is the typical 80/20 blend of Roditis and Malagousia, unoaked and coming in at 12.5% alcohol. Even as vintages vary, this has been a pretty consistent white of late—it’s a perfect summer refresher with good acidity, a clean finish and perky fruit. I’ve liked them in lighter years and riper years. It seems to work out. This walks down the middle of the road, and it seems to hit a sweet spot. Perhaps, too, I’m seeing it a bit earlier than normal. In any event, while this doesn’t have a lot of body, it has beautiful persistence and purity. The fruit, in its youth, seems just-crushed. It always finishes dry and lively. This is in fine form. It’s hard to rate it much higher given its modest concentration, but it’s also hard to be overly churlish given how invigorating it is. My only advice: drink it very young. Being fresh is what it does best. It isn’t likely to reward aging even if it holds.
