Meadowbank’s Riesling vines, mostly Geisenheim 198 clone, were planted in 2005 and, since the arrival of Peter Dredge in 2016, have surely never been put to better use. From 2017, Dredge —“one of the most intellectual and smartest winemakers in the country” (Gary Walsh)—has rolled out organic practices across all the Estate’s vineyards allocated for the rebooted Meadowbank label. From the Estate’s sandy north-facing slopes, this juicy, spine-tingling Riesling was handpicked, whole-cluster pressed and naturally fermented: 60% in stainless steel with a smidge of residual sugar remaining and 40% wild-fermented in wood until dry. Both parcels were matured on their lees for three months before blending and bottling without fining.
Hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed wild-fermented, 4 months on lees, 50% in stainless steel, 50% in used French barriques. One of those wines you can see out of the corner of your (oenological) eye just as you are about to move on, for it has a veritable peacock's tail finish, expanding dramatically with the intensity of its lime juice fruit.
