Cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith MW already had unbeatable experience when they founded Shaw + Smith as a virtual winery in 1989. In '99 Martin and Michael purchased the 36ha Balhannah property, building the superbly designed winery in 2000 and planting more sauvignon blanc, shiraz, pinot noir and riesling. It is here that visitors can taste the wines in appropriately beautiful surroundings. Exports to all major markets.

Shaw + Smith began over a long lunch in 1989 when cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith decided to realize a long held dream to make wine together. Their vision is to make exciting, refined wines exclusively from the Adelaide Hills that rank amongst Australia's best.

Beware the siren with the ruby-red lips. In a smoky room, here she strides  – confident, cool, arresting. Slender, stalky cherry and a smear of blackcurrant bite, spiked with crushed peppercorns. No sunny smiles here, this is deadly serious. Leaner, finer and taut, it marks a big stride ahead from previous vintages. This vision of cool-climate shiraz marks a new age of measured sophistication.

Bright, deep purple colour with a fresh, fragrant, floral aroma which echoes stalky whole-bunch fermentation. The wine is sweetly juicy on the fore-palate before slightly chewy tannins chime in and cleanse the finish, leaving a clean, dry aftertaste. A statuesque wine which definitely needs more time: it’s a bit chewy and grippy right now, so serve with protein-rich foods. High potential.

Sourced from 3 sites, a mix of whole berries and bunches, matured for 14 months in a third new oak. There's an alluring mix of fruit and flint in the aromatics, offering an early hint of the balanced earthiness and plum fruit flavours sitting very comfortably together across the whole length of the palate. Fine, white peppery notes from the tannins add a savoury element on the finish.
