This year’s blend was drawn mostly from Les Grand Champs, a site abutting the 1er Cru belt that lies below the village, between Les Mitans and the D974. To this parcel Leroux married a few barrels of 1er Cru La Gigotte, which lies directly south. Looking forward, the 2018 includes some Carelles, which again lies directly south of Gigotte. Leroux getting his ducks in a row. Across the blend, just 10% new oak and roughly the same percentage of whole bunches were employed this year. This has a supple and flowing palate of red fruit, with fine energy and tender Volnay tannins. A very impressive run out for this core release. So perfumed, with raspberry and red roses to the fore, a silky core of fruit, just enough powdery tannins and a long sappy close. Delicious!
“Top Value. Super-fresh and perfumed aromas of red and dark berries, earth and a whiff of spice lead to sleek, well-delineated and punchy middle weight flavors that possess just a bit better depth on the ever-so-mildly austere finale that evidences a mineral character. This is a quality Volnay villages and worth checking out.”

“The 2017 Volnay Village produced a normal volume, according to Leroux, mostly from the lieu-dit of Grand Champs. It has a crisp blackberry and raspberry scented bouquet with light floral tones. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, plenty of sucrosity and an effervescent, orange-sorbet-tinged finish. Delicious.”
