While three generations of the family have been involved since Robert (Bob) Stein began the establishment of the vineyard, the chain stretches even further back, going to Bob's great-great-grandfather, Johann Stein, who was brought to Australia in 1838 by the Macarthur family to supervise the planting of the Camden Park Vineyard. Bob's son Drew and grandson Jacob have now taken over winemaking responsibilities. Jacob worked vintages in Italy, Canada, Margaret River and Avoca, and, more particularly, in the Rheingau and Rheinhessen regions of Germany. Since his return one success has followed another.
Johann Stein arrived in Australia in 1838 bringing with him select Riesling cuttings (the first cuttings to survive in Australia) and viticultural expertise to supervise operations at Macarthurs Camden vineyards. Many Generations later, Robert and Lorna Stein established Steins Wines in 1976 on 25 acres of prime viticulture land in Mudgee. The vineyard and winery is now in the hands of second Generation Andrew Stein, and Third Generation Winemaker, Jacob. The vines now approaching 40 years old, are producing some of Mudgees most awarded wines.
James Halliday Wine Companion
Crisp, lime and bright citrus notes. A classical dry Riesling, with all the lime and fruit characters you would expect, and a crisp and racy finish with a slight touch of sweetness.
