Jack Denis Pooley was born in Lancashire, England in 1908. Me too, but MUCH MUCH later on. This is a Vineyard selection from Cooinda Vale with 30% from 1992 planted vineyard and 70% from Abel clone. It’s 100% destemmed and cops 60% new oak barrique.
Cherry, a whole lot of spice, stony earthy things, roses and pencils. Medium bodied, juiciness of cherry with sap and spice, cool ‘mineral’ feel, particularly good emery tannin, tangy brightness and energy, and that tannin shaping up the long finish to wonderful effect. The Abel clone rides high in the wine, or so it tastes to me. Excellent.

A little background on Denis!
JACK DENIS POOLEY
Born in Lancashire, England in 1908
He spent his time in England working through the ranks with the family business of Henry Pooley & Son Ltd – (Mechanical Engineering), based in Liverpool on the banks of the Mersey river.
Denis started as an apprentice engineering mechanic & worked his way into the design and manufacturing side of the business, the company invented and held the world patent of the weigh bridge! An example of the companies platform and engine weighing scales can be found in the grounds of the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in Launceston, Tasmania.
Denis moved to London in 1935 and worked for his Uncle Roy Pooley in a wholesale electrical business until deciding to move the family in search for greener pastures.
Arriving in Tasmania in 1953, Denis worked hard to create the life he dreamed of for the family. The engineering and wholesale electrical background helped to cement the path for Denis, meeting a business owner on the travel over from England he landed a role in retail and wholesale sales for a local electrical wholesaler. He was then head hunted into a career in car sales.
In 1954 Denis started the local chapter of the Beefsteak & Burgundy Club in order to share his passion for fine wine and Pinot Noir.
Once his son John Pooley finished his automotive mechanical apprenticeship in 1965 they opened Performance Automobiles in North Hobart.
The vines were not planted until 1985, 5 years after Denis retired from the automotive game. This was the distraction to keep him busy in retirement.
The first vintage harvested was in 1989 of which they sold the fruit, the following year they employed Andrew Hood as a contract winemaker to craft the first wines for them, Denis constructed the original labels and most of the wine was consumed by the family. Denis continued tending the vines with Margaret until he passed away in 1994 at the age of 86
