Ernst Loosen is known for one of the wine world's greatest contributions to the Riesling cause. Less well known is his devotion to Pinot Noir, which he's been growing since 1996 at his Pfalz winery Villa Wolf. In 2004 he hosted a young Oregon Pinot producer named Jay Somers for harvest in the Mosel. Their friendship led to a partnership, and in 2010 they built a winery and planted a vineyard in Oregon’s northern Willamette Valley, in the Chehalem Mountains AVA. The winery specialises in Pinot Noir made using the traditional methods of Burgundy, including biodynamic practices in the vineyard. These wines are handcrafted in small batches and throw a spotlight on the distinct sub-regions—and best vineyards—of Oregon.

The 2016 Willamette Valley bottling is sourced from several of Jay Somers's favourite volcanic soil vineyards in the Dundee Hills AVA. Home to the first Pinot Noir vines ever planted in Oregon, the Dundee Hills are iconic and established the Willamette Valley as a serious wine region. The deep, well-drained, volcanic Jory clay soil gives us beautifully savoury wines with purity and a finely focused structure.
100% Pinot Noir (Pommard, Wadenswil, Coury and Dijon 777 clones) grown on the Baptista Maresh, La Colina, Charlie’s and Bella Vida vineyards. All are sustainably dry farmed, giving average yields of 2.3–2.7 tonnes per acre. 100% destemmed; fermented with native yeasts; natural malolactic conversion; 19 months in barriques (25% new); no fining or filtration.

Deep brilliant red. Highly perfumed, mineral- and spice-laced red and blue fruit, incense, violet candy and savory herb aromas show impressive clarity and pick up a subtle vanilla note as the wine stretches out. Sweet, seamless and penetrating on the palate, offering powerful cherry, boysenberry, cola and black cardamom flavors braced by a spine of juicy acidity. Dusty, slow-building tannins frame the dark-berry-driven finish, which shows outstanding clarity and minerally lift.
