Nestled underneath the Grand Cru vineyard of Mazis-Chambertin and immediately north of Clos Prieur, La Perrière enjoys a superb position on the Côte. As the name suggests—Perrière has an etymology that relates to ‘stone’ or ‘rock’—this is a very stony vineyard. Produced from just a third of a hectare of 50-year-old vines, the wine falls stylistically somewhere between the simmering intensity of Mazis-Chambertin and the cool freshness of Harmand’s monople 1er Cru, La Bossière. It is a terrific Gevrey— packed with ripe blackcurrant and inky fruit, toasty, classy oak, fine tannins and a vibrantly fresh, cool mineral finish. Superb now, but it will only get better with age.
“Reduction. The medium-bodied flavors are both finer and more mineral-driven yet they aren't quite as dense or complex on the slightly warm and equally firm finish. The refinement of a premier cru is evident but it's not necessarily a foregone conclusion that this will ultimately be the better wine.”
