This is, simply, primordial Gevrey from one of the finest sites in this famous village, and remains one the best-priced red Grand Crus that we can offer today. Mazis-Chambertin lies at the northern end of the Grand Cru slope, directly adjacent to Clos-de-Bèze. This wine comes from six different parcels over 0.73 ha in both Mazis-Haut and Bas (that average 45-plus years of age). Mature vines in such a terroir bring depth and power, yet also great class. Phillipe Harmand’s work in Mazis has drawn praise from his Gevrey neighbour, Arnaud Mortet, who told us recently that, “Phillipe has some of the best vineyards in Mazis, and he produces one of its best wines.” Again there is no reduction now (why Meadows keeps mentioning reduction—a character which is absolutely natural in powerful Burgundy from barrel—is beyond me) but there is plenty of depth and extract that will make for a great bottle in the decades ahead.

“Firm reduction. Otherwise there is outstanding richness and mid-palate concentration supporting the big-bodied flavors that coat the palate with dry extract which also buffers the firm and ripe core of tannins shaping the beautifully long, complex and highly persistent finale. This is a classic Mazis if perhaps just a bit less youthfully austere than usual.”
