2016 Tenuta Ulisse Amaranta Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, Abruzzo

The origin of this grape has always been uncertain. In early 20^th century it was thought to be a ‘Sangioveti’ variety. Today we are sure that the two grapes have nothing in common. Cultivated predominantly in Abruzzo, plus regions of central south Italy, Montepulciano has emerged as one of the best quality red grapes to come out of Italy. The climate in which it grows is characterized by high temperatures all year round, very little rainfall and a wide temperature range between night and day.

Aged 9/12 months in the French and American barriques Amaranta is ruby red with garnet reflections; opulent fruit, the bouquet is intense, fruity, persistent, with notes of dried flowers, spice, licorice, marasca cherries. The palate is stylish, velvety, almost creamy, compact with tannic structure that blends nicely with the alcoholic component. Complex, elegant, well balanced with a long aftertaste. Ideal for roasts, game, strongly flavoured dishes and mature cheese.Certainly, among the best Montepulciano D’Abruzzo. Very limited.
