The Château Pâto legacy lives on through son Nicholas. The majority of the old vines are Shiraz with smaller blocks of Chardonnay, Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier and Mourvedre. Nick makes both the old Hunter River Burgundy style with the ‘OPV’ Old Pokolbin Vineyard Shiraz, while the ‘DJP’ which is named in commemoration of Nick’s late father David John Paterson is more of the fuller Claret style.
Nick is making stellar five-star wines at Château Pâto that are produced in tiny quantities. We are grateful to get our hands on small quantities of these modern Hunter Wines.
DJP is made from 100 % Shiraz originally planted in 1981 at Château Pâto in Pokolbin. The vines have been dry-grown, which makes the vine stress alittle and in turn produce pristine low yielding crops that have been the flag ship of Château Pâto since the early 1980’s.

The colour is black with nice bright purple rim, but is very deep and dense. The wine displays an intense nose, of dark fruits, ripe blackberry, currants & spice. The spice carries through to the palate. There are flavours of tapenade and cured beef as well. The DJP Shiraz is a dense wine needing time to flesh out.
Drink in now for a full spectrum of youthful flavours, however careful cellaring of up to 15 years+ will result in beautiful classic Aged Hunter Shiraz. Brilliant with a casseroles, red meat or rich hearty dishes
