2019 Ch La Tour Figeac, St Emilion

A little subdued, this has a high tannin count, at least in terms of how it feels on the attack. As it opens, there is some lovely bright spice notes, both pepper and wild herbs, along with blueberry fruits and silky liquorice. Enjoyable. A yield of 37hl/ha, aged in a mix of 225l oak barrels (50% new oak), 400l oak barrels and amphoras - with the aim of decreasing oak influence while keeping the added structure that it brings. The 2019 La Tour Figeac, from an estate currently experimenting with ageing their Cabernet Franc in clay amphorae, offers ripe black cherries, violets and crushed stone on the delineated nose. Theses constitute some of the best aromatics that I have found in a La Tour Figeac in recent years. The palate is clean and fresh with bold tannins and very mineral driven. A sappy, marine-tinged finish expresses its terroir with style. Unquestionably, this is the best La Tour Figeac that I have ever tasted...might it be yours too?

The 2019 La Tour Figeac is a very pretty, expressive wine. Bright floral notes, espresso, rose petal and cinnamon top notes from the Cabernet Franc give La Tour Figeac its distinctive aromatic signatures. Time in the glass brings out a whole range of red-toned fruits. Medium in body, gracious and supremely elegant, La Tour Figeac is hugely promising. There is a purity to Franc here that is just remarkable.
