Leroux's Auxey-Duresses is drawn from three terroirs--Les Hautés, La Macabrée and Les Boutonniers--all abutting Meursault's border. The land here is north-facing and defined by the rocky soils and the cold air that rolls down from the Hautes-Côtes. The oldest vines here date back to 1946. This was mostly vinified in 12-hectolitre casks with one-third raised in 300-litre barrels. The 2017 is an outstanding release for this cuvée, with silky Meursault-like fruit, almost exotic, and vibrant yet tropical fresh pineapple and golden delicious fruit notes offset by chalky freshness and zesty lime. It closes with gentle grip.
Distinctly more lemon-limey and stony on the nose than the Monthélie Les Duresses, with a tangy hint of orange and an element of leesy complexity. A supple, ripe, fruit bomb on the palate, offering a silky mouthfeel and a suggestion of banana. Best today on the broad, dense, firm finish, which delivers a subtle hazelnutty quality and lovely subtle salty minerality.
