2018 Loosen Bros. Dr. L Dry Riesling, Mosel

An abundance of appley fruit inhabits a polished palate whose sense of stuffing is enhanced by Loosen’s having lengthened to six or seven months the time that some of the base wines spend on their lees. A hint of salinity stimulates the salivary glands on an otherwise rather simple, slightly opaque finish. At 12% alcohol, any opportunity to convey levity seems to have been sacrificed. This isn’t quite up to the quality of the 2015, but it still offers good value – and even if that weren’t the case, this cuvée would be worth writing about every year simply because of its ubiquity in the marketplace and of whose wine it is. (There are close to 60,000 liters of this mega-cuvée, albeit subject to multiple bottlings.)
