The entire medieval village of Serralunga d'Alba is located in the Barolo denomination and accounts for 16.49% of total Barolo production.

Dominated by its imposing fourteenth-century castle Serralunga turns out the most complex and age-worthy Barolos from its 39 crus, a number of which are among the most coveted sites in all of Barolo.

The Serralunga’s most prized vineyards are at the highest altitude and boast full southern exposure which together prolong Nebbiolo’s growing season yielding some of the most austere and powerfully structured Barolos that in top vintages can evolve and maintain for decades.

Today many Serralunga producer are crafting wines that can be approachable six or seven years after the harvest but can still stand the test of time beautifully.

The 2016 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba is a gorgeous entry-level offering from Pira that shows the muscle that is so typical of Serralunga. Rose petal, mint, dried cherry, licorice anise and blood orange infuse the 2016 with tremendous aromatic and flavor complexity. Readers looking for an affordable, high-class Barolo will find that here. In a word: superb. The straight Barolo is a blend of lower-lying slopes of Marenca and Margheria, Rivette and Sorano, which makes its debut in this bottling in 2016.
