2017 Vietti Nebbiolo Perbacco Langhe, Piedmont

A gift to the Gods! Strong, intense and powerful, this nebbiolo is a stellar example of the fruits of Piedmont, with a nose full of truffle, cherry, tar and plum and the flavour to match. “Perbacco” translates to “For Bacchus” – this is Vietti’s offering to the Wine God. For such an offering, it would want to be good, and thankfully, it is! Enjoy it with hearty winter stews, roasted red meats and sharp aged cheeses.

A wine with a diehard fan club, the Vietti 2017 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco drinks like a young Barolo but costs a fraction of the price. I really need to say little more because that accurately sums up the vast appeal of this classic and versatile Nebbiolo. The bouquet is expressive and fresh with wild berries, blue flowers, spice and tobacco. Besides a bit more color concentration that you might notice in the wine's appearance, Perbacco magically shows no sign of the hot vintage.

The 2017 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco is silky, perfumed and pretty. Sweet floral notes, mint, chalk and sweet red berry fruit are all laced together in this very pretty, inviting wine. Pliant and racy, the Perbacco is a terrific introduction to the Vietti wines.

This is a wonderful vintage for Perbacco made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes with all parcels grown in the Barolo region. The average age of vines is 35 years . The wine offers generous fruit along with menthol, spices and hard candy, showing notable intensity while retaining an essentially mid-weight style. Strong, intense and powerful when young, complex and elegant with the ageing. Have it with hearty stew, wild game, roasted red meats and sharp, aged cheeses. Extremely limited - only few dozen available.
