2017 All Saints Estate Basket Pressed Durif, Rutherglen

It's boozy and sweet, but boy is it seductive. It's port-like in its flavour profile but it remains fresh and, arguably, frisky. In essence: it's a big mouthful of well made (and remarkably soft) red wine.

Durif is such a local hero that is sometimes referred to as Rutherglen Durif. A cross of Peloursin and Syrah, the variety prospers almost exclusively in North East Victoria. The long warm days experienced in the Rutherglen wine region give the grapes plenty of time to develop their intense colour and rich flavours. 

The firm tannins and depth of flavours of Durif are well suited to hearty dishes. Try pairing with rich Beef Bourguignon or sticky lamb shanks slow cooked in red wine. 

Durif has a deserved reputation as a great red wine for ageing. This wine too has plenty of tannin and enough acidity to keep it balanced and improving for 5 to 8 years. It will throw some sediment, so it best decanted before serving.
