2020 Josef Chromy Pinot Noir, Northern Tasmania

Hand picked from from 80% estate-grown vines, planted 1998 and 2007. Cold soaked; fermented in 15 batches; 25% whole bunches; small proportion of wild ferment; regular pigéage and intermittent rémontage; matured 10 months in French oak barriques. There is an ever more pronounced stamp of terroir on Tasmania's increasingly demarcated subregions, and wines like this declare it with authority. The definition of Relbia pinot, at once deeply set in black cherry, black plum, anise and licorice, at the same time soaring with violet fragrance and all the energy of Tasmanian acidity and finely textured tannins. Is Relbia the Gevrey of the Tamar and is Chromy its Chambertin? This wine says, 'yes, and yes!'
