This beautiful Chardonnay of pristine, sky-clear freshness, was drawn from old vine Mendoza from Waipara vineyards (on both Omihi clays and Rangitata gravels). Hand-picked and wild fermented, the 2019 was raised in French barrels (20% new) for 12 months, before settling in stainless steel tanks on light lees for a further four months.
Bottled unfined and unfiltered, leaving the wine with a lightly hazy appearance, it opens with a complex mineral-etched nose, with savoury cashew notes supported by ripe stone and citrus fruits, all with an underlying salinity. The palate is super-vibrant with a salivating citrus drive, supported by gentle toasty oak, all showing a delicious assortment of bright, ripe, plush fruit, and great structure and texture.
Jasmine and ginger, apple and nectarine. It’s saline, distinctly umami and nutty, roast chicken, with pickled ginger, apple cider and pink grapefruit flavours, a gustatory lactic tang, chalky feel and a savoury/floral finish of excellent length, with a slightly sour pucker to close. Delightful. Love it.
