Jaeger-Defaix’s newest red cuvée (100% Pinot Noir) comes from a small parcel of Rully villages purchased in 2011. Sited in the Vorot lieu-dit, the 30-year-old vines here have been farmed organically for decades. This is a well-sited parcel that yields small bunches of grapes with thick skins and concentrated juice. The fruit this year was fermented with 20% whole bunches, and the wine was aged in seasoned oak barrels (from one to three years) for 15 months.
Didier Defaix describes his 2019s as having “the frame of the 2017s and the pleasant [fruity] style of the 2018s”. What Mr Defaix is underselling in this case is an enchantingly slinky Rully. It’s laden with seamlessly rendered red fruit, bramble and undergrowth flavours, bright acidity and gentle, feathery tannins. It’s ready to charm, although has the stuffing to develop more complexity over the coming years.

A ripe and somewhat fruity nose combines notes of red and dark raspberry with those of earth and a hint of the sauvage. There is an appealing underlying tension to the firm and relatively powerful flavors that flash a touch of rusticity on the sneaky long finish. This should reward a few years of cellaring if desired.
