It's no exaggeration to say that well-traveled Benjamin Gras is crafting some of the most elegant and soulful wines in the Southern Rhône. It's a sea change from the intense, powerful and sometimes oaky wines made by his father. Yet Yves Gras seems pleased by his son's change in direction and he's often around the winery, pouring the wines for visitors and thoroughly enjoying himself while doing so.

Deepish red colour with a subtle rim of purple, the bouquet offering ripe dark cherry and plum layered with a mixture of spices, the palate full-bodied and rounded, supple and smooth in spite of quite lavish tannins. The fruit is ripe and sweet, very plummy/spicy and generous in the mouth. A hint of nuttiness, possibly from oak. Some almond-shavings as well. Long palate with generous flavour and tannins in harmony. An excellent wine and great value.

Parcels planted exclusively at Les Aubes and La Ponche lieux-dit; Average vine age 60 years. Comprising 80% Grenache, 20% Syrah. Aged 18 months in 36-hectoliter oak Stockinger foudres, and 8-hectoliter terracotta amphorae. Unfined and unfiltered at bottling.The grapes are hand-picked into crates and sorted manually in the vineyard before a second, table sorting in the cellar. A proportion is destemmed, the quantity being determined by the nature of the vintage and the parcel, and the grapes are fed by gravity into the vats to ensure the integrity of the berries. Fermentation takes place in thermo-regulated stainless-steel vats for 20 to 30 days, with two long pumping over sessions daily. Punching down is decided after tasting. Pressed pneumatically. Malolactic fermentation in vat. The wines are clarified by settling over winter in the cellar. Barrel filling occurs in the spring.
