The colour is pale, the bouquet intense and bright in flowery aromas without yeastiness, hints of frangipani, star jasmine and apple turnover, the palate likewise super-intense and nicely dry, with seamless acidity and a long carry. Lovely now, and great potential for ageing.

A fine Frankland River Riesling. Handpicked from their blocks C and D of the estate’s Powderbark vineyard, the fruit was gently whole bunch pressed with a natural fermentation, after which it spent time on lees for texture and complexity. This is very pale, just a hint of a dilute yellow hue. A focused and yet powerful style, with a minerally/chalky backing. Attractive citrus notes, most notably grapefruits and a touch of lime. Attractive florals. This is still very young and probably needs at least a decade to really hit its straps, when it should really blossom into something special. There is sappy acidity and a hint of a saline note all adding to the complexity on offer. A fine, tight, fresh Riesling with serious length. You’ll surely enjoy it now, but even more so if you can give it time.

A tightly-wound wine that needs a moment for the nose to open up. Vibrant kumquat and mandarin orange aromas with a touch of basil. Sleek, crisp and focused with tons of stony energy driving the long, precise finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

As with all Swinney’s wines, attention to detail is pivotal to the quality. This dazzling riff on Frankland River Riesling is drawn from hand-selected fruit from two of Swinney’s oldest blocks in the Powderbark vineyard. Here, precise vineyard management—including the uncommon use of shade cloth to protect the grapes from the afternoon sun—is employed along with careful bunch selection to eliminate fruit with excessive sun exposure.

In the cellar, this wine is whole-bunch pressed, only lightly settled and fermented naturally on high solids in tank, where the temperature of the ferments can rise as high as 20 degrees. These techniques are still highly atypical in the world of Australian Riesling. This kind of practice can only work with outstanding fruit, and here it works brilliantly, creating superb texture and discrete complexity.

Those who have met Rob Mann will know he is not renowned for gilding the lily, so when he describes the new vintage as “one of the best Rieslings we’ve ever made”, you can dial your expectations to high. The new release opens like a lightning bolt of energy, with notes of apple blossom and sea spray in the slipstream. On the palate, textural grip and savoury succulence work alongside chalky structure, saline minerals and juicy citrus flavours. It’s a scintillating Riesling of mouth-watering purity and laser-like precision. Set your phasers to stunning.
