An organically grown, barrel selection of four Central Otago vineyards - The Fusilier in Bannockburn, First Paddock in Gibbston, Last Chance and Red Bank in Alexandra. Mid-ruby in the glass, there’s some lovely whiffy struck match reduction on the nose here, twitching through the wild strawberry, macerated raspberry and red and dark cherry fruits. Sinewy with a stony, fine-tannin chew, layers of exotic spice, light game tones and an earthy flow as the wine trails with a bright, minerally cadence, powering it forward; this is great drinking.

95 points Dave Brookes Halliday Wine Companion April 2026

Two Paddocks has become one of New Zealand’s most respected Pinot Noir producers, founded by actor and long time wine lover Sam Neill with a clear focus on organic farming and authentic Central Otago character. What began as a small passion project has evolved into one of the region’s benchmark estates, with vineyards spread across Bannockburn, Alexandra and Gibbston. The rugged southern landscape, dramatic temperature shifts and schist rich soils give the wines an unmistakable mix of purity, perfume and savoury depth.

The 2024 Pinot Noir is beautifully vibrant and finely detailed. Wild cherry, dark plum and raspberry aromas lift from the glass alongside dried thyme, violets and subtle earthy spice. There is an effortless flow to the palate, balancing juicy red fruit with fresh acidity and silky tannins. Beneath the brightness sits a more savoury side beginning to emerge, bringing hints of forest floor, black tea and smoky herbs that add complexity without taking away from the wine’s energy and drinkability.

This is Pinot Noir made for long lunches and slow evenings. Roast duck with cherry glaze would be superb, though it would also pair beautifully with mushroom risotto, grilled salmon or lamb cutlets with rosemary. Slightly cool the bottle and it becomes incredibly moreish, especially with charcuterie, hard cheeses and plenty of conversation around the table. There is a lovely confidence to the wine, combining the purity and freshness Central Otago is famous for with the polish and balance that continue to make Two Paddocks a favourite among critics and collectors alike.
