2015 Le Macchiole Paleo Bolgheri Organic, Tuscany

A$210.00

First produced in 1989, this incredible wine is the symbol of the winery, and it truly epitomizes Bolgheri. At first, the wine was a classic Bordeaux blend but became a Cabernet Franc monovarietal in 2001; since then, it has been a huge success. The name “paleo” refers to a wild herb found on the Tuscan coast, and it symbolizes a strong local identity and the will to reach all goals

Bolgheri is located on the Etruscan Coast between the hills and the sea in a natural, overwhelmingly beautiful paradise. And it is in Bolgheri that Le Macchiole has been cultivating its vineyards since 1983. It was a territory that was literally discovered out of nothing; the brainchild of visionary experiments; a peripheral, unknown corner of the Tuscan coast far from the classical winemaking history of Tuscany that nonetheless became one of the most important players on the Tuscan – and Italian – wine scene. The first regulations for the appellation date back to 1983, while the DOC was established at the beginning of 1984. The characteristics of the land together with the dry, gently ventilated climate, the temperatures that are slightly lower than the rest of the Tuscan coast, and the unique brightness of the area all contribute to the definition of a typically Mediterranean environment particularly well-suited to growing varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Syrah. Excellent results are also seen in the cultivation of Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Viognier, and Vermentino. The soils in Bolgheri demonstrate a high degree of variability, so much so that 27 separate soil types have been identified within the appellation. Most of the terrain in the area has clayey, sandy alkaline terrain with notable depth and a mineral skeleton that is very fine but nonetheless substantial. All of these are perfect conditions for the production of elegant wines with long aging potential..

Note: 100% Cabernet Franc.
Paleo Rosso arrived in 1989. It is the wine that has evolved well over time: born originally as a classic Bordeaux blend in 2001, eventually arriving as a 100% Cabernet Franc. This is a beautiful story of obstinacy in challenging the stereotype of Cabernet Franc, which is already difficult to produce, and even more so as a pure varietal wine.

‘There are so much essence-like fruits on the nose of this Bolgheri Rosso, from blackberry perfume and dark-cherry compote to fresher elements of rosemary, lavender, hot stones and citrus. Full body with generous fruit, but the firm and beautifully woven tannin backbone keeps the palate fine and elegant. Very long on the finish. Drink in 2024.’

‘There is a gorgeous nuttiness to the 2015 Paleo. It is a highly aromatic expression of Cabernet Franc, with a bouquet of roses and some notes of red cherry. The vineyard team was careful in timing the harvest and fermentations to make sure the fruit did not come in too ripe and so they could maintain the natural freshness of the grapes. The oak used is moderately to highly toasted so they could get more of those nutty notes instead of the more common coffee or chocolate aromas we associate with barrique. It is aged for 22 months and the overall result is incredible. Drink: 2020-2040’

The 2015 Paleo Rosso is powerful, dense and super-concentrated, with all of the richness of the vintage very much on display. The 2015 is going to need time in bottle to develop the full breadth of its aromatics. Today, it is dense, powerful and very closed. Even so, there is terrific persistence and follow through. All the 2015 needs is time to unwind.
