Martinborough pinot noir at the hand of one of the masters. “The name Crimson is inspired by a love of rata and pohutakawa, New Zealand’s stunning red-flowering native trees. Sales of this wine support the Project Crimson charitable conservation trust”. It isn’t the flagship pinot from Ata Rangi but boy is this a powerful wine. Impressive to say the least.
Crimson is a selection of fruit from younger parcels of vines from own various vineyards on the Martinborough Terrace. In their youth, vines tend to be more fruit expressive, gaining more complexity with time. Now, Crimson is developing more depth of flavour, with a mix of vines aged from 5 to 20 years.
The nose is complex and beguiling with notes of cranberry, raspberry, carraway and an earthy spice note. The season of 2018 has delivered a finely structured palate, with a gentle sweet entry and enticing bramble fruits and finishes with a flourish of fine savoury tannins – classic Martinborough.
The winemaking philosophy is the same as for Ata Rangi signature Pinot Noir: no enzymes or yeasts are added, providing a hands-off, traditional approach which we feel more truly expresses the site.
Deep colour with a touch of development; reserved, earthbound aromas, herbs, dark fruits, while the palate has depth and structure. Abundant slightly sappy tannins which leave a slight bitterness, quite acceptable. Deep set raspberry and dark cherry, almost blackberry flavors. This would take some age well. Serious Pinot. 21 NOV 2020 Drink 2020–2033

Aromatic pinot noir with an appealing mix of cherry, plum, mint, dried herbs, and spicy and stemmy flavours. A supple, attractive wine that's perhaps not as concentrated as its distinguished stable mate, but represents excellent value at this price. A wine of character and class. 24 SEP 2019 Drink 2019–2025

There’s so much to this wine. It is a pinot that really speaks of quality tannin, fresh and quite concentrated fruit flavors and a layered, succulent, fleshy and rich, dark-cherry finish. One of the best value wines on the planet, hands down!
