Hennessey XO is rich, full-bodied, complex, and has always embodied the finest traditions of Hennessy cognac. Originally created in 1870 by Maurice Hennessey using very old eaux-de-vie, XO was reserved exclusively for his family and friends. XO is blended from more than 100 eaux de vie specially selected from the four premier growing areas. Some of the eaux de vie used in the blend have been ageing in the Hennessy warehouses since the early part of this century.
The first wave, rich in dried fruit aromas such as prunes or dried figs, overcomes you. The aromas evolve to more dense notes of chocolate and black pepper, mellowed by cinnamon, clove and cardamom spices. These fragrant and generous scents of crystallized fruit, oak, spices, and emanation of old leather, all fall into place very distinctly Very balanced on the palate, X.O confirms the aromas discovered by scent: dried fruit and chocolate. Elegant and robust, it reveals balance, roundness, and harmony among aromas, underlined by the strength of peppery notes, and vegetable fragrances from the oak. A lovely long after taste is enrobed in velvet conferring the last sweet notes of cinnamon and vanilla.
This is the original XO, the one that created the category. “From 12 to 30 years old, with an average of 12 years,” according to the brand ambassador. Reddish copper in color. The attractive fruity nose features notes of prune and dried cherry, along with honey and pepper. On the palate, it’s woody, and you get inklings of rancio, but the secondary notes are fresh and fruity, with date and prune, balancing the walnut and antique furniture varnish. Solid quality, but not particularly unique. (40% abv)
