From old vines grown at the very top of the most renowned terroir of Morgon, the Côte du Py, on the crushed blue schist of the ancient volcano. Predominantly de-stemmed, followed by a 2-3 week fermentation and maturation in a mix of barrique and larger format oak.
The Château Grange Cochard 2016 Côte du Py is also an outstanding wine and the year in the bottle since I last tasted it has done nothing to dissuade me from the supposition that this is one of the wines of the vintage! The bouquet is pure and classy, offering up scents of red and black cherries, woodsmoke, raw cocoa, emerging notes of gamebird, fine mineral undertow, gentle floral tones and still that touch of orange peel in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with excellent focus and grip, suave tannins and a long, tangy and complex finish. Great juice from a great terroir in a superb vintage- what is not to like! 2022-2060.

Bright ruby. Intensely perfumed aromas of fresh red/blue fruits, incense, candied flowers and exotic spices; a smoky mineral accent gains strength as the wine opens up. Stains the palate with intense raspberry, cherry and boysenberry flavors that convey a suave blend of power and delicacy. The mineral-driven finish shows outstanding tenacity and smooth, well-judged tannins.

Aromas of cherries, pomegranate and dried flowers mingle with subtle soil tones in a complex bouquet, introducing the 2016 Morgon Côte du Py, a medium to full-bodied, velvety wine with a deep, multidimensional mid-palate, considerable concentration and tangy balancing acids, concluding with a long finish. This is a terrific Côte du Py from James and Sarah Wilding, and it is well worth seeking out. Drink 2018-2030.
