Thanks to the cooler season, the 2012 Restanques is a more supple and primary fruited wine than the vintages either side. The tannins are also super fine, giving centre stage to the wines' fruit notes of blackberry, dark cherry, anise, and dried flowers. With the higher dose of Grenache, it's more lifted than the estate Bandol, with terrific brightness and prettiness and a perfumed finish suggesting the fruit notes listed above but also some creeping, magnificently savoury characters like wild lavender, balsam and bay. All in all, a cracking value Bandol with some secondary, aging notes just starting to complex things. Steak-frites, please.
