This steep, south-facing chalky slope is one of the very finest terroirs for Gewürztraminer in Alsace. The soil is brown clay full of limestone, with a pebbly structure that holds both moisture and warmth. Picking up from the northern limit of Altenbourg, the terraced slopes of Furstentum rise swiftly from 300 to 400 metres at the top of the Mont de Sigolsheim. As always, this remarkable terroir has produced a Gewürztraminer that bears no resemblance to the stereotype.
The 2018 is nothing short of magic, and reminded me as much of a ripe, exotic Riesling as it did Gewürztraminer. In short, the terroir speaks louder than the variety. It’s a viscous, silky wine with generous sweetness and notes of quince, candied orange and honeysuckle. The length goes on and on. Again if matched with the right foods (although it doesn’t really need food) it would be mind-blowing. With roughly 40g/l residual, balanced by structure and freshness, it would be brilliant with many styles of Asian cuisine—more specifically chilli crab or any spicy seafood dishes. Of course, it’s also a winning match with Munster/Époisses (or any washed rind cheese).
