Diam. 2018 is the third release of Guffens’ latest masterpiece, Mâcon-Pierreclos Juliette et les Vieilles de Chavigne. “For many years I have wanted to produce a cuvée from the parcel of vines that I call “Juliette”, says Guffens. Planted in 2003, the vines are rooted in such poor, stony soil that even Guffens wonders how the vines manage to grow. With the baby vines stunted by the 2003 heatwave, these plants produce such intense yields, with soaring, concentrated acidity, that the juice is blended with a portion of old vines from Les Vieilles.
The end result is a stunning ‘freak’ wine of incredible depth and deliciousness. Somehow it’s hugely powerful and incredibly seductive at the same time. This is a wine that could only come from Jean-Marie Guffens!
The 2018 Mâcon-Pierreclos Juliette et les Vieilles de Chavigne is another fabulous rendition of this cuvée. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of minty green apples, pear and lime zest, it's full-bodied, deep and immensely layered, with searing concentration, striking structure and a long, intensely chalky finish. Cropped at a mere 36 hectoliters per hectare, this attained 15.3% alcohol with a pH of 3.15, the kind of chemistry that most winemakers can only dream of.
