This wine is Michael Downer's first step on the Chardonnay rung, sourced from premium vineyards in the Lobethal district, Oakbank and the Piccadilly Valley of the Adelaide Hills. Each small parcel is chosen to provide unique, yet complementary, elements with the idea of bottling a sum that is greater than its parts. The fruit was hand-picked then whole-bunch pressed for a natural ferment in a mix of barriques, puncheons and foudre (15% new) and left on lees to mature for 10 months.
Pitch perfect year, pretty much', says winemaker Michael Downer, 'with good yields', he adds. Laid back but the mind's switched on as always. There's three different chardonnays in the Murdoch Hill mix now, this, the Tilbury and the Rocket. There's three different sites in this actual wine, and multiple techniques and vessels giving detail to the juice. Complexity in the winemaking overlay, you could say. Lemon balm, faint saline notes, touches of oatmeal, quite a delicate perfume here though wholly appealing. Zesty and fresh to taste, light creaminess to texture, good length of flavour, layers of spice. Has that light bircher muesli flavour profile, grated apple included, spice, saline notes and strong sense of vibrancy. What a delight!
