A really pretty nose that shows so much floral character, such as crushed violets and dried herbs. Citrus and orange rind, too. Full body, tight and polished tannins and a long, minerally finish. Such a pure and refined wine. Drink now or hold.

Candialle is an under-the-radar estate in Panzano in Chianti owned by Josephin and Jarkko Peränen. The 2013 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is an impressive wine that makes me very curious to taste more wines from an estate I admittedly know little about. This is an elegant and generous wine that packs lovely intensity into a compact, mid-weight delivery. The bouquet is redolent of wild berry, garden herb and pressed violets. This wine will be difficult to locate because a mere 900 bottles were produced.
Established by Finnish couple Josephin & Jarkko Peränen, Candialle is in Panzano's Conca d'Oro. The vineyards are 300-360 metres above sea level, facing south-southwest on mainly galestro soil. Plantings include a portion of bush-trained Sangiovese at densities up to 10,000 vines per hectare. Initial aromas of macerated cherry and toast make way for nuances of star anise, clove and pine. There is plenty of concentration here, but ripeness is kept in check and the whole is lifted by a brightness and minerality. Drinking Window 2020 - 2030
