My word. While I’m not a big one for non-native grape varieties planted on Italian soil, I do have a soft spot for Merlot and Cabernet grown there. I liked this more than Ned Goodwin MW, who tells me I’m a fan because ‘I am old and English’. Anyway, it included 20% Sangiovese, the rest is Cabernet Sauvignon. Blackcurrant, nutmeg, espresso, almost to violet perfume. Intense, pencil and shale, very mineral and fine, succulent melting tannin, dense, tight, but not clumsy, iron and ferrous feel, very long and precise to close. Made a big impression on me, for sure, so I nudged the score one higher. Marvellous.

Majority Cabernet, with a good splash of Sangiovese. It is the sort of wine that shows just how fine Italian Cabernet can be. It is the most obviously full-bodied wine of the range while boasting fealty to Montefili’s light touch. Scents of currant, black plum, grilled meat, Asian five-spice and a pointed beam of pencil lead-graphite acidity meld with bitter chocolate and coffee grind riffs from the oak. The tannins, impeccably hewn and beautifully attenuated, guide the flavours about the mouth. Controlled aggression! 2025-2042
