This wine is an assemblage of villages from the southern end of the Côte de Nuits: Corgoloin, Comblanchien, Premeaux, Brochon, Couchey. The name "Côte de Nuits" comes from the town of Nuits-Saint-Georges, like Beaune, the capital of its own Côte (or slope). The soils are clay and limestone. The fruit is handpicked and sorted before fermentation in French oak barrels (10% in new oak).for 12 to 15 months.
The Côtes de Nuits Villages will spend 16 months in barrel (perhaps longer than I would expect). It has a crisp, slightly pinched blackberry and briary-scented bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied, smooth and supple with sappy red berry fruit, a little spiciness creeping in towards the compact, nicely structured finish. Drink 2017-2023.
