As mentioned in the note for the red, the Clos Saint-Jean lies right next door to the cellars and the Estate’s parcel sits in the heart of the original Clos (i.e. the vines are surrounded by stone walls). The white wines this terroir delivers typically offer plenty of texture and depth and so I was curious to see how this source of some of Pillot’s richest whites would have performed in 2018. I needn’t have worried! The 80-plus-year-old vines have delivered a spectacularly mineral, rocky and savoury white Burgundy that drives across the palate. It’s refreshing and bursting with saline and citric energy. Sorry to sound like a broken record but, yet again, this is almost certainly the finest example of this cuvée we’ve shipped.
A vague whiff of exotic fruit is present on the slightly riper aromas of pear and apple compote, white flower and a hint of lychee. There is better richness and volume to the attractively textured medium-bodied flavors that possess sappy mouthfeel, all wrapped in an agreeably dry, clean and sneaky long finish.

The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean unfurls to reveal hints of citrus oil and crisp green apple, complemented by notions of almond paste and spring flowers. Medium to full-bodied, chalky and layered, this is a mineral, succulent Clos Saint-Jean that should show well young.
