Col McBride knows his wines and he’s an unabashed fan of the legendary Château Rayas. His aim here has been to produce a Grenache of great finesse and perfume from his old, Estate vines. To be specific, this comes from a two-acre parcel of Adelina’s vines, planted in 1942 on desiccated grey loams. It’s a plot known as the Springvale Block, or sometimes simply Block Two, and it’s is just a stone’s throw away from the iconic Wendouree vineyard.
The fruit for the 2019 was picked on February 2nd and was all de-stemmed (with plenty of whole berries). The wine then spent 28 days on skins before being pressed to large-format, neutral French oak for 10 months. With the notes below I suppose we only need to state the obvious: this is a superb Grenache, fine boned, perfumed and intense. And, once again, it is superb value.
This has such attractive and pure, fresh-raspberry, red-cherry and red-plum aromas with some subtle spice and dried-wood notes. The palate has a succulent, juicy and energetic feel with mouthwateringly fresh red-berry flavors. So tautly focused and approachable yet resilient tannins. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Serious grenache from serious but fun-loving Adelina. Concrete fermented, matured in old wood. Beautiful, light garnet colour all shimmering and pretty. Just shy of medium weight, a sheath of firm but silky tannins, cherry juice, pomegranate, rose hip tea the baselines. Light spice elements, dry and savoury, exceptional structure through this wine, you feel all the ribs of grip and pucker, a skeleton draped in Something Special Grenache. Tannins of great nebbiolo, let’s say. Tightly wound, don’t expect flourishes, this is complex and wonderful stuff here.
