Just across the road from the Watervale cemetery, with headstones listing a district who’s who, is a block of 20 year old shiraz. These vines are really hitting their straps to produce elegant perfumed fruit from the valley’s cool micro climate.
This wine displays blue black fruits, dark forest fruits and spiced dough. Coiled spice, blackberry compote, lightly spiced vanilla, and a deep brooding core that has a moreish texture and flavour. A classic Clare Shiraz.
This is a nice wine, demonstrating how much better shiraz can be from these parts when not too tricked up with winemaking chicanery. Blue to black fruit allusions, a whiff of Clare mint, bitter chocolate and Cherry Ripe flavours, all. Round, gently tannic and of a relaxed freshness.
