2012 Moet & Chandon Grand Vintage Rose, Champagne

Expressive flavors of dried cherry, singed orange peel and red licorice are backed by a firm spine of acidity in this racy rosé Champagne, which is tightly meshed and balanced, with the creamy mousse carrying hints of salty mineral and grilled nut on the mouthwatering finish. Made from a blend of 42% Pinot Noir, of which 13% was vinified red, 35% Chardonnay and 23% Pinot Meunier and aged for five years before release, this opens with a generously rich nose spelling toasted scone and strawberry compote, immediately present and seductive with the merest hint of smoke. The palate is juicy, there is a suggestion of plump, ripe fruit, something cherryish and generous. The foam is lively, and gives away an edge of the slightest apple pip bitterness that sets an accent amidst the fruit. This is fresh but rounded, lively and sprightly with some more of that apple pip edginess. Drinking Window 2020 - 2030

Like the Blanc, the 2012 Grand Vintage Rosé is tightly wound and reticent. Bright red cherry, cranberry, rose petal, cedar, flowers, mint and
crushed rocks are all laced together in this finely sculpted Champagne. Readers should be prepared to cellar the 2012 for at least a few years,
as it is nowhere near ready to drink. The blend is 42% Pinot Noir (of which 13% is still red Pinot), 35% Chardonnay and 23% Meunier.
Chef de Caves Benoît Gouez is presenting his 2012 vintage Champagnes earlier. Moët skipped both 2010 and 2011, the first time the house has skipped
consecutive vintages since 1967 and 1968, which created more demand in the market than normal. Not surprisingly, the wines are a bit tight in the early going.
That should not be an issue in time, but readers need to be patient.
