For a number of years Adelina have been working with an exciting parcel of Nebbiolo fruit from the Bowe Lees vineyard at Woodside (the inaugural 2011 release was drawn from the agreeably named Talc Hill Vineyard, located at Gumeracha). The Bowe Lees-Loveys vineyard lies 390 metres above sea level and was planted between 1998 and 2002.
Col McBryde fills in the winemaking specs thus: fruit was handpicked and destemmed; maceration times varied, from 40-odd days up to [a Lunga Macerazione] 82 days on skins. Post pressing, the wine was racked to large format French oak for 14 months for (indigenous) malo and maturation. The earlier bottling is designed to catch as much primary charm as possible, and boy does it work; in the pantheon of Australian Nebbiolo, Adelina now sits somewhere near the top.
Strawberry conserve, curry leaf and assorted dusty spices, a little aniseed and dried flower. It's light to medium-bodied, juicy but slightly tangy red fruits, fine dusty tannin, a quiet succulence, aniseed and floral/mint things on a bright and long finish. Different expression of Nebbiolo, but good.
