Certified organic. 2019 marks the first vintage of this certified organic Pinot Noir, sourced from Quealy's Balnarring vineyard. Specifically, the grapes have come off the 1996 plantings adjoining the Seventeen Rows old vines block.
Tom McCarthy's aim here was to craft a fun-loving, earth-to-glass Pinot for drinking rather than thinking. Hence, there's a strong carbonic element, less time on skins, very little in the way of sulphur additions and, the only oak the wine sees is upwards of five years old. Having said that, this is no simple lightweight Pinot! Rather, it's a vibrant, juicy and lifted wine with a silky palate underscored by a lingering savoury finish and super fine tannins. Classy stuff.
Kool Keith has some great playtime in my music repertoire, perhaps named for him here. Cherry juice, bright, kirsch, light spice, some balsamic notes, faint mushroomy earthiness, tang, tartness, sheath of lean tannins, cool finish. Does a lot. Tastes like fancy Pinot with a savoury bent. Lively little thing. Do like it.
